STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Seawolves had four players score in double figures, led by Diaka Berete, who had 21 points, six rebounds and three steals. Nal'La Bennett added 18 points and four assists and Johanna Potter chipped in as well with 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
The Stony Brook offense was productive from beyond the arc, knocking down 10 threes on 24 attempts. Berete was Stony Brook's most prolific shooter from long range, draining five treys in the contest.
The Stony Brook defense held New Jersey City a 30.4 percent mark from the field, including 28.6 percent from three-point range.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After jumping out to a 14-6 advantage, Stony Brook went on a 9-0 run with 2:57 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Delaney Cooper, to increase its lead to 23-6. The Seawolves entered the quarter break with a 23-10 advantage. Stony Brook capitalized on four New Jersey City turnovers in the period, turning them into six points on the other end of the floor.
Stony Brook built upon the first quarter lead, going on a 10-0 run starting at the 6:47 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Bennett, to increase its lead to 39-16. The Seawolves proceeded to tack on to that lead and enjoyed a 50-21 advantage heading into halftime. Stony Brook dominated in the paint, scoring 20 of its 27 points close to the basket.
Stony Brook used a 9-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Bennett, to expand its lead further to 61-23 with 6:35 to go in the third quarter. The Seawolves held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 72-34 edge. Stony Brook continued to dominate inside, scoring 16 of its 22 points in the paint.
Stony Brook widened its lead, expanding the advantage to 40 points, 78-38, before going on another 7-0 run, finished off by Melissa Mwanza's layup, to grow the lead. Stony Brook cruised to the 85-38 victory in its return to Long Island.
