Women's Soccer - CAA Final Elon

Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Stony Brook Equalizes Late, Ultimately Loses in Penalty Kicks to Elon in 2025 CAA Championship Game

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Stony Brook women's soccer forced overtime with an 89th-minute score but ultimately fell in penalty kicks to Elon in the 2025 CAA Championship Game on Sunday afternoon at LaValle Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a long feeling-out process between the two sides with an NCAA Tournament berth on the line on Long Island. Kristina Garcia put forth the first shot of the contest just under eight minutes into action, an easy save on a shot from distance for Elon's Katie Bisgrove. Abigail Roche had perhaps the best chance in the early going, but saw her shot sail just over the top of the cage.

Elon's best opportunity in the opening 45 minutes came on back-to-back shots that never found their way toward goal. Angelina Lent stepped in to block both shots and Stony Brook cleared the potential danger.

The Seawolves were out-shot 7-3 in the first half, but were responsible for the lone shot on target over the opening 45 minutes.

Roche saw a shot on target to begin second-half action at LaValle corralled by Bisgrove. Later it was Garcia on the doorstep who was turned away by Bisgrove and then Linn Beck's chance was also stonewalled.

Elon struck first, scoring on a set-piece in the 68th minute. A long pass towards the box was headed home by Isa Murdock, who beat Jona Hennings to the spot to break the ice.

Time dwindled on Stony Brook's season and the rain began to pick up, and so did Stony Brook's pressure offensively. It paid off when Sammy Hannwacker played a long ball towards the box that a Phoenix defender tried to clear with her head, but it caromed back past Bisgrove and into the back of the net, leveling the match with 1:42 remaining in regulation.

After a scoreless pair of overtime periods, neither side could find the golden goal, sending the 2025 CAA Final to penalty kicks. Reilly Rich buried one to lead things off and after Elon's first attempt hit the post, Stony Brook owned a 1-0 edge. Bisgrove came up with a huge stop on the second Seawolves' shooter and Elon evened things at 1-1 through two rounds of penalty kicks.

Stony Brook's seventh-round attempt was stopped by Bisgrove and Elon sealed the win on the next kick.
