Stony Brook Upsets Columbia in OT Stunner

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Seawolves handed Columbia just its second loss of the season on Tuesday as they took down one of the top mid-major teams in the country 77-73 in overtime.

How It Happened

  • After both teams were held scoreless through the first three minutes, Quin Gorman finally opened up scoring at 16:37 with a three from the left side. Andrej Shoshkikj would follow up with back-to-back layups, before Richard Goods  drained a three to make it 10-0 at the 14-minute mark. Ultimately, it would take until 13:02 for the Lions to get on the board with their first points of the night.
  • With nine minutes remaining, Stony Brook's defense would continue to hold strong as it limited the Lions to just five free throws and zero field goals for nearly seven minutes. Meanwhile, the Seawolves offense added another 14 points in the same span, bookended by threes from Pratt and Gorman, to extend the lead to 28-13 with under three to play. Ultimately, Stony Brook would finish off the half up 30-17.
  • Columbia's scoring woes continued into the early minutes of the second half as the Lions were held to seven points in the first four minutes, all the while Stony Brook grew its lead to 37-24 as Goods added a massive alley-oop to his stat sheet.
  • Inside of 10 minutes to play, the Lions managed to pull within as they cut the lead down to 42-36. Pratt would do it all over the next two minutes to get the lead back into double-digits as he came up with a steal and bucket, followed by an assist on Tomas Valentiny's alley-oop and finally making an and-one to make it 49-38 with under seven to go.
  • Toby Onyekonwu would give Stony Brook its largest lead of the night at 4:48 after sinking one from deep, before Valentiny came up with another dunk to grow the lead to 16 a minute later.
  • The Lions, though, were not done yet as they went on a 16-2 run to eventually tie the game at 63-63 with 48 seconds remaining. It would stay tied at 65-65 by the end of the half.
  • Playing in overtime for the first time this season, Onyekonwu got things started off with a quick jumper. Neither team would score again until 1:28 when Pratt made two from the line to make it 69-65. A Columbia three got them back within one, but four-straight free throws from Pratt were enough of a cushion to secure the eventual 77-73 victory.

Stats and Notes

  • The Seawolves shutout the Lions for six minutes and 58 seconds to start the night.
  • Stony Brook held Columbia to just six field goals and a .240 FG% in the first half, including 0-for-9 on three-pointers. The Lions would not record a three-pointer until 15:24 in the second half.
  • Pratt recorded his fourth game of the season with at least 20 points after scoring 24 tonight. Nine of those points came via the free throw as he set a new career high and shot 81.8%.
