Stony Brook Falls to Chattanooga, Gardner-Webb on Day One of Spring In The Springs

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — Stony Brook softball dropped a pair of neutral site contests against Chattanooga and Gardner-Webb to begin play at Spring in the Springs hosted by Gardner-Webb.

GAME ONE: CHATTANOOGA 7, STONY BROOK 0
  • The Mocs got to Stony Brook's starter, Gabrielle Maday, in the first inning. Chattanooga pushed across three runs to open the game on three hits and a defensive miscue by the Seawolves.
  • Kyra McFarland and Alyssa Costello hit safely in the bottom of the first, but were stranded on the corners after a pair of strikeouts.
  • The Mocs added two more runs in the second, forcing Maday out of the game. Jordyn Fray entered in relief for Maday, allowing her lone inherited runner to score on a Seawolves' error. Fray retired the next three hitters to end the second inning.
  • Trailing by six runs, Stony Brook could not get much going offensively. Chattanooga tacked on an insurance run in the third.
  • The Seawolves put a runner on in the third and fourth frames, but could not push a run across.
  • Stony Brook did not register another hit until McFarland's triple with two outs in the seventh, but were ultimately shutout in game one.
GAME TWO: GARDNER-WEBB 7, STONY BROOK 3
  • McFarland started game two with her third hit of the afternoon, but Stony Brook stranded a pair of runners in the first inning.
  • The Bulldogs pushed two runs across in the first inning against Seawolf starter Madelaine Male.
  • Both sides went down in order in the second inning before the Seawolves struck for three runs in the third.
  • Daniella Sofia led off the third inning with a single, coming around to score on a passed ball. Madelyn Stepski delivered a two-run single that gave Stony Brook a 3-2 advantage.
  • Gardner-Webb responded with a game-tying double in the home half of the third inning. The Bulldogs chased Male in the fourth inning, adding four more runs on three hits to pull away.
  • The Seawolves managed just two more hits in the contest, falling to Gardner-Webb in the nightcap on Friday.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"Tough day for us in terms of execution and results. Game one we looked like a team that hadn't played in two weeks. Game two we had better approaches at the plate and were sharper defensively, so we need to carry that into tomorrow. We have to cut down on our free bases as well," head coach Megan T. Bryant said.
