MIAMI, Fla. — Stony Brook softball opened its 2025 season by splitting a pair of contests on the opening day of the Felsberg Invitational in Miami, taking down Iowa State in the season opener. The Seawolves secured an 8-2 victory over the Cyclones thanks to timely hitting and a complete-game effort from
Gabrielle Maday.
GAME 1: STONY BROOK 8 - IOWA STATE 2
- After trailing 1-0 early, Kyra McFarland opened the scoring for the Seawolves with a three-run triple in the top of the second.
- Madelyn Stepski plated another run with a solo homer in the top of the fourth to make it 4-1 Stony Brook.
- The Seawolves added three more runs in the top of the fifth courtesy of a pair of two-RBI singles from Emily Reinstein and Mia Vannelli. Stony Brook closed its rally when Reinstein came around to score on a wild pitch.
- In the top of the seventh, Marissa Thalassinos tacked on another run for the Seawolves via an RBI single.
- Stony Brook emphatically wrapped up the win with an outfield assist from Alyssa Costello to cut down a runner at the plate.
STATS AND NOTES
- Stony Brook opens the season with a power-conference victory over the Cyclones in the first-ever matchup between the two programs. It marks the third straight season that the Seawolves have picked off a major-conference opponent (Mississippi State in 2023 and Ohio State in 2024).
- Maday tossed a complete game, punching out seven and allowing only two runs on seven hits.
- Every Seawolf in the starting lineup recorded a hit in the season opener.
- Emma Scheitinger recorded the first hit of her collegiate career.
- In her collegiate debut, Vannelli recorded her first career hit, RBI, run scored, and multi-hit game.
- Thalassinos notched her first hit at the NCAA level in her Division I debut.
- Stepski's second-inning homer was the first of her career.
- McFarland's three RBI were a new single-game career high.
GAME 2: INDIANA 10 - STONY BROOK 0 (5 INNINGS)
- A sacrifice fly gave the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
- Indiana tacked on four more runs in the second by way of a fielder's choice, two-run double and an RBI groundout.
- A walk and a single put a runner in scoring position for the Seawolves, but Stony Brook could not capitalize.
- The Hoosiers pushed their advantage to 7-0 in the top of the fourth via a two-run single.
- Indiana added three more runs in the top of the fifth before closing things out in the bottom half of the inning.

- McFarland notched three base hits.
- Malorie Hill made her collegiate debut.
- Crimson Rice made her collegiate debut and first career start in the circle.

Stony Brook returns to action tomorrow for the second day of the Felsberg Invitational. The Seawolves will face the host, FIU, in a doubleheader, with game one starting at 12:30 p.m.
