Seawolves Shut Out Pioneers in Game Two, Split Doubleheader at Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Stony Brook softball split a doubleheader at Sacred Heart, shutting out the Pioneers in the second game on the strength of Mia Vannelli's three RBI and Maddie Male's complete game.

GAME ONE: SACRED HEART 1, STONY BROOK 0
  • Kyra McFarland hit a two-out double in the top of the first, but was stranded after a strikeout.
  • Freshman starter Crimson Rice retired the side in order to toss a clean first inning.
  • Vannelli singled to lead off the second and advanced to second, but the Seawolves could not bring her around to break the ice in game one.
  • Rice cruised through the second, setting the Pioneers down in order for the second straight inning.
  • Naiah Ackerman hit safely with two away in the third, but Sacred Heart stranded a Stony Brook runner for the third straight inning to keep things scoreless.
  • Rice worked around a one-out walk to complete a third straight scoreless inning to begin her afternoon in the circle.
  • Madelyn Stepski started the fourth inning with a single, advancing all the way to third base with two outs, but the Seawolves again came up empty in the fourth.
  • After 4.1 no-hit innings, Rice lost both the no-hitter and the shutout on one swing in the fifth, allowing a solo homer. She left a runner on third to limit the damage.
  • Sacred Heart's Sweet set down 10 straight Seawolves before walking Nicole Allen with one out in the seventh. Allen, representing the tying run, never moved into scoring position. Sweet closed out what she started, tossing a complete-game shutout and earning the victory for the Pioneers in the first of two games on Tuesday.
GAME TWO: STONY BROOK 8, SACRED HEART 0 (5 INNINGS)
  • Vannelli started the scoring in the opening inning of the second game, doubling to plate a pair of runners. McFarland started the two-out rally, singling and moving to second on a walk drawn by Allen. Both McFarland and Allen came around to score on Vannelli's two-bagger.
  • Daniella Sofia led off the second with a double, coming around to score and pad the Seawolves' lead courtesy of Alyssa Costello.
  • McFarland and Allen hit back-to-back doubles to start the third inning, scoring on a Vannelli single and a Rice groundout.
  • Kaiya Simpkins reached on an error, allowing another run to score. Simpkins then scored later in the frame on a wild pitch. The Seawolves scored five times in the frame, extending the lead to 8-0 through three-and-a-half innings.
  • Male completed three scoreless innings, allowing just one baserunner through her first time through the Pioneers' order.
  • Male continued to cruise, working around a leadoff single in the fourth and then retiring the side in order in the second to finish off the complete-game shutout and salvage a split of the doubleheader.
