STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Stony Brook softball won its ninth straight conference game, downing Monmouth 8-0 on Friday afternoon at University Field.
Alyssa Costello homered and drove in four runners and
Crimson Rice twirled a complete-game, one-hit shutout of the Hawks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stony Brook put two runners on with nobody out in the first inning, but could not come away with runs.
- The Seawolves loaded the bases with one out in the second frame, breaking the ice on a Costello single into right field.
- Rice worked around a one-out walk, her second of the game, to complete a third straight hitless inning to begin her afternoon.
- Mia Vannelli added to the Seawolves' lead with a solo shot in the third inning. Emma Scheitinger followed with a triple and scored on an Emily Reinstein sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 in favor of Stony Brook.
- Monmouth broke up the no-hitter in the fourth frame with a two-out double that put a pair of runners in scoring position. Rice induced a ground ball to escape the jam and keep the shutout intact.
- Stony Brook opened things up in the fourth inning. Naiah Ackerman and Kyra McFarland reached safely to start the frame, trotting around to score on Costello's three-run blast that forced Monmouth to go to the bullpen.
- Leading by six runs entering the fifth inning, the Seawolves put the winning run on second base, but could not enact the eight-run rule. McFarland made it a 7-0 game with a sacrifice fly, but the winning run was left 60 feet shy of the plate.
- Stony Brook pushed the winning run across in the sixth inning on a Reinstein single to the opposite field.
