Stony Brook Offense Keeps Stride, Cruises to Big Victory Over Monmouth to Complete Sweep

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Stony Brook softball scored 14 runs for the second straight day, completing a weekend sweep of Monmouth to notch an 11th straight CAA win. The Seawolves tallied a season-high 16 hits en route to a second straight 14-run outburst to take down the Hawks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • As they did on Saturday, Stony Brook's offense put on a show in the first inning. The Seawolves scored seven times in the opening frame, highlighted by homers by Emily Reinstein and Naiah Ackerman.
  • Staked to an early seven-run advantage, Crimson Rice worked around a one-out single to complete a second straight scoreless frame.
  • The Seawolves added to their lead in the home half of the second with freshmen Nicole Allen and Mia Vannelli producing run-scoring hits to make it 9-0. Reinstein and Ackerman followed with two-out hits that plated runs to put Stony Brook ahead 11-0.
  • Alyssa Costello led off the third with a triple, scoring Stony Brook's 12th run of the contest on a triple by Allen.
  • Rice allowed a leadoff double in the fourth, but kept Monmouth off the board despite the runner in scoring position with nobody out.
  • Kyra McFarland and Costello each brought a run around in the fourth to help the Seawolves reach 14 in the run column for the second straight day.
  • Rice allowed back-to-back hits with two outs in the fifth, losing her shutout, but finished the complete game and earned the win by inducing a ground ball on the infield.
STATS AND NOTES
  • Reinstein notched a team-high three hits and four RBI. She finished a triple shy of the cycle, blasting her third homer of the season in the first inning.
  • Ackerman also homered in the first frame, matching Costello for the team lead with four so far this season. Ackerman's 24 RBI this year are a team-best mark.
  • Costello tallied three hits, all of which went for extra bases. She doubled and hit a pair of triples, scoring three runs and driving in one.
  • McFarland hit her eighth triple of the season, setting a new program record for a single season. Her eight triples are third-most in the NCAA this season. McFarland is up to 12 triples in her career, one shy of the program record for a career.
  • Rice tossed her fifth complete game of the campaign. She has won six straight starts and moved to 7-4 on the season.
  • The win is Stony Brook's 11th straight against a CAA foe and eighth straight at home.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"Great game on our part in all three facets: pitching, hitting and defense," head coach Megan T. Bryant said postgame. "14 runs on 16 hits, you can't ask for much more efficient production than that. Big sweep for us in terms of CAA play."
