Stony Brook’s Streak Snapped in Series Finale at UNC Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. — Stony Brook softball fell to UNC Wilmington, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon. The Seawolves brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but could not complete the comeback.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After being retired in order in the first, Stony Brook put a pair of runners on in the second after a walk drawn by Mia Vannelli and a single by Emma Scheitinger. Wilmington worked out of trouble to keep the Seawolves off the board in the second.
  • UNCW opened the scoring in the home half of the second, with a two-out, two-run homer breaking the ice on Easter Sunday.
  • The Seahawks added another run in the fourth inning courtesy of some good base running. A two-out infield single allowed a runner to come around and score from second after Naiah Ackerman's diving stop. Jordyn Fray entered in relief of Crimson Rice, retiring the final batter to complete the fourth frame.
  • Scheitinger led off the fifth inning with her second hit of the afternoon, but was stranded at second.
  • Wilmington added to its lead with another two-run shot in the fifth inning, chasing Fray from the game. Gabrielle Maday entered and cleaned things up, retiring the two hitters she faced.
  • Unlike the past two days, Stony Brook could not muster much in the sixth inning. Kyra McFarland led off with a double, but moved no further.
  • Stony Brook did not go down without a fight, loading the bases with nobody out after Vannelli, Scheitinger and Reinstein all reached to begin the seventh inning. Kaiya Simpkins pinch hit and brought home the Seawolves' first run with a ground out.
  • The Seawolves loaded the bases again with two outs, bringing Costello to the plate as the tying run. After she plated a run, UNC Wilmington finally closed the door on Stony Brook's late comeback effort.
STATS AND NOTES
  • Scheitinger was responsible for three of Stony Brook's six hits. She registered her eighth multi-hit performance of the season and second three-hit game.
  • Costello and Simpkins plated runs for the Seawolves.
  • McFarland (27) and Costello (17) extended their on-base streaks, with Costello hitting safely for a team-leading 16th straight game.
  • Wilmington snapped Stony Brook's streak of 13 straight conference wins, which was the longest active streak in the nation entering play on Sunday.
