NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Stony Brook baseball team earned its fourth straight win and improved to 7-0 in midweek games this season, defeating Central Connecticut State 6-1 on Tuesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Seawolves got on the board in the first inning with a two-out rally sparked by a double from Nico Azpilcueta. Chanz Doughty followed with a double of his own to bring Azpilcueta home and give Stony Brook a 1-0 lead.
- Left-hander George Adams made the start for the Seawolves and allowed an opening-inning run but stranded two runners after Scott Gell threw out a runner at second base.
- Gell led off the second inning with a single, but CCSU kept the Seawolves off the board. Adams returned for the bottom half and stranded two more runners with a groundout to first base.
- After the Seawolves went down in order in the third, Aidan Colagrande entered the game and struck out two of the three batters he faced in a 1-2-3 inning.
- Johnny Pilla delivered a two-out single in the fourth and stole second, but the inning ended on a fielder's choice.
- Following a leadoff triple by CCSU in the bottom half, Colagrande answered with back-to-back strikeouts and a lineout to preserve the 1-1 tie.
- Chris Carson led off the fifth with a bunt single, stole second, and reached third on a CCSU error. Brett Davino drove him in with an RBI groundout to reclaim the lead, 2-1.
- Vincent Mariella entered in the bottom half and struck out the first batter he faced. After a flyout and a two-out walk, he ended the inning with a fielder's choice to keep the advantage.
- Stony Brook erupted for four runs on two hits and one error in the sixth to extend the lead to 6-1. Azpilcueta, Pilla, and Doughty worked back-to-back-to-back one-out walks. Gell delivered a two-RBI single, followed by an RBI groundout from Carson and an error that allowed Gell to score.
- Mariella returned with a 1-2-3 sixth inning, striking out the side.
- After Erik Paulsen doubled in the seventh, Nicholas Rizzo entered with two runners on and two outs. He worked out of the jam with a lineout to third.
- Rizzo got a 6-4-3 double play to end the eighth, then closed out the ninth by stranding two runners to lock in the 6-1 win.
