Seawolves Manage Just Three Hits, Suffer Rare Home Loss to Hofstra on Saturday

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Stony Brook softball was shutout, falling to Hofstra 6-0 on Saturday afternoon at University Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Maddie Male drew the start for the Seawolves, producing a 1-2-3 first frame to begin her afternoon after a 10-minute rain delay.
  • Nicole Allen singled with two away in the bottom of the first, but it was all Stony Brook managed in the home half of the first.
  • Male worked around a pair of singles in the second inning, stranding a pair of runners to work a second scoreless inning.
  • Emma Scheitinger reached base via a hit-by-pitch with one out in the second, but the Pride's starter struck out the next two Seawolves to leave another runner on base.
  • Hofstra was the benefactor of some two-out offense, scoring the game's first run on a double to left that plated a runner from first base. The ensuing hitter homered to right to put the Pride ahead 3-0 in the third.
  • Alyssa Costello reached safely on a bunt single with two away in the home half to extend her hitting streak, but was stranded there.
  • Male worked through the fourth inning, getting some help from her defense when Nicole Allen bookended a non-traditional double play by cutting down a runner at home trying to score from third on a fly out.
  • Mia Vannelli was hit by a pitch leading off the fourth, advancing to second on an Emily Reinstein sacrifice bunt. Stony Brook's first runner in scoring position was left in scoring position to end the fourth.
  • Crimson Rice entered in the fifth inning in relief of Male, working around a pair of walks to keep Stony Brook's deficit at three runs.
  • A two-out double by Costello put a pair of runners in scoring position, but for the second straight inning the Seawolves could not capitalize.
  • After two quick outs, Hofstra registered back-to-back singles to put runners on. The Pride added an insurance run on a double that pushed another run across before Rice concluded the frame with a punchout.
  • Hofstra added two more runs in the seventh after a throwing error allowed two runners to score.
  • In a six-run hole, Stony Brook went down in order in the seventh, turning Sunday into a rubber game with the Pride.
STATS AND NOTES
  • Stony Brook was shut out by a conference opponent for the first time this season.
  • Costello was responsible for two of Stony Brook's three hits, extending her hitting streak to 19 straight games and her on-base streak to 20 consecutive contests.
  • The Seawolves offense was just 1-9 (.111) with runners on base and 0-3 with runners in scoring position on Saturday. Hofstra capitalized with runners on, notching seven hits and finishing 3-8 (.375) with runners in scoring position.
  • Three of Hofstra's six runs were produced with two outs.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"Disappointing day for us in all three parts of our game: pitching, offense and defense. We weren't very good in any of the three today and we will look to respond tomorrow," head coach Megan T. Bryant said.

UP NEXT
Stony Brook and Hofstra wrap up the Battle of Long Island on Sunday, April 27. The Seawolves will honor its senior class: Alyssa Costello, Gabrielle Maday, Maddie Male, Kyra McFarland and Emily Reinstein prior to first pitch, scheduled for 2 pm at University Field.
