Softball Shuts Out Hofstra, Secures Series Win on Senior Day

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Stony Brook softball shutout its Long Island counterpart on senior day, securing a series-clinching victory on Sunday at University Field. Gabrielle Maday tossed a complete-game shutout, striking out six.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Maday worked around a one-out single to put up a zero in the first frame.
  • Kyra McFarland kicked off her senior day with a single to left field, advancing to second base after a throwing error. After moving up 60 feet on a ground out, McFarland scored after Mia Vannelli reached on an error.
  • Hofstra loaded the bases with one out in the second, but Maday induced a ground ball and then struck out Villar swinging to leave the bases juiced.
  • Maday worked around traffic in the third inning as well, leaving two more runners on to maintain the shutout.
  • McFarland singled for the second time on Sunday, moving to third on a Nicole Allen single with one out. Hofstra's Ernst stranded a pair of runners in scoring position by getting a strikeout and a ground ball.
  • After stranding two more runners in the fourth inning, Maday registered her first 1-2-3 inning in the fifth.
  • The Seawolves added an insurance run courtesy of a two-out double by Vannelli that allowed Alyssa Costello to score.
  • Maday retired the side in order in the sixth and despite Hofstra putting the tying runs on base in the seventh, she finished what she started and shut out the Pride.
STATS AND NOTES
  • Maday moved to 7-7 on the season, tossing her first complete-game shutout of the season. She scattered six hits, walked two and struck out six. Maday's six punchouts were one shy of her season-best mark, set against Iowa State in the season opener.
  • Stony Brook's first six hitters all registered hits, led by McFarland's two singles.
  • Costello stretched her hitting streak to 20 straight games and her on-base streak to 21 consecutive contests.
  • Vannelli was responsible for bringing both Stony Brook runs home.
  • Hofstra hitters left 10 runners on base.
  • Stony Brook improved to 12-3 at home this season.
