Women's Lacrosse Defeats Elon To Advance To Third Consecutive CAA Championship Game

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Following a dominant 15-4 victory over Elon in the CAA Championship Semifinals on Thursday afternoon, the No. 19 Stony Brook women's lacrosse team advanced to its third consecutive CAA championship game.

Today's win advanced the Seawolves to their 12th conference championship game in the last 14 years. It was also a day for the record books, as Avery Hines set a new program record in career caused turnovers. While in net, Natalia Altebrando set the single-game record for saves in a conference tournament game.

Seven different goal scorers paced the Stony Brook offense, including six multi-goal scorers. Charlotte Wilmoth and Casey Colbert both recorded hat tricks, while Wilmoth led the Seawolf attack, tallying a game-high six points.

Defensively, Hines recorded a game-high four caused turnovers, as Isabella Caporuscio scooped up four ground balls. In net, Altebrando had yet another impressive showing, going on to have a career day, making 12 saves on a .750 save percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After Stony Brook opened the scoring, Elon scored three straight goals to close the opening quarter of play. The Seawolves responded in the second, scoring two goals in the first six minutes to even things at 3-3.

Just 19 seconds after tying things up, Stony Brook recaptured the lead courtesy of a free-position goal from Alexandra Fusco, never looking back from that point on. The Seawolves closed out the quarter with two more free-position goals from Riley McDonald and Julia Fusco, taking a 6-3 lead into the locker room.

Stony Brook continued to cash in on free-position chances in the third quarter, opening the second half scoring with a free-position goal from Caporuscio. Elon would answer back with its own free-position goal, making it a 7-4 game with 9:39 remaining in the third. Stony Brook responded less than a minute later with a goal from Colbert, going on to close the quarter on a 5-0 run.

Now leading 12-4, the Seawolves would tack on three more goals in the fourth, securing a 15-4 victory and a third consecutive trip to the CAA Championship game.
