STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook earned a 2-1 victory against Sacred Heart on Monday evening at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. Caleb Danquah and Kristoffer Aarflot both scored in the contest, with Aarflot's representing the game-winning goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stony Brook started the scoring in the fifth minute when Danquah found the back of the net for the first time this season. Freshman Ryan Farr eluded Sacred Heart's keeper, managed to tip toe along the endline and feed a ball back in front to Danquah who easily scored on a vacated net. The Seawolves kept the Pioneers off the board in a chippy first half that featured six yellow cards between the two sides.
The Pioneers evened the match in the second half on a goal from David Garcia Gallego in the 53rd minute. The Seawolves' constant pressure offensively saw them break through late in the match however. Aarflot tallied the first goal of his collegiate career in the 83rd minute after a perfect ball from Nelson Reynoso off a set-piece. Finlay Oliver played the initial ball from Reynoso down, which found Aarflot and eventually the back of the cage. Stony Brook held off Sacred Heart to emerge with the 2-1 victory.
STATS AND NOTES
- Danquah and Aarflot tallied goals, the first two of the season for the Seawolves.
- Heidar Hermannsson recorded four saves for the Seawolves out of 16 total Pioneers shots.
- Farr, Oliver and Reynoso all notched assists in the victory.
- Stony Brook outshot Sacred Heart 10-7 in the second half, though the Pioneers finished with a narrow 16-15 edge in total shots.
