Seawolves Begin Weekend with Loss to Army

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Despite three Seawolves picking up double-doubles today, the Stony Brook volleyball team was defeated by Army 3-1 (21-25, 28-30, 25-16, 24-26) on Friday at Chace Athletic Center in day one of the Bryant Invitational.

The non-conference loss moved Stony Brook to 3-4 on the season.

Quinn Anderson (18 kills, 11 digs), Kali Moore (19 kills, 10 digs), and Ava Zamora (32 assists, 12 digs) were three Seawolves with a double-double today.

How It Happened

SET 1 | After Stony Brook started things off by taking a 3-0 lead, the Seawolves and Golden Knights would end tied eight times over the first half of the set until Army took a 13-12 lead and never gave it up. Despite only totaling two more kills the rest of the set, courtesy if Anderson and Moore, Stony Brook still kept it close, scoring three in a row late to make it 23-21, only to fall just short of completing the comeback.

SET 2 | Set two proved to be even closer than the first as the Seawolves played their longest set of the season so far in an eventual 30-28 loss. Initially falling behind 8-3, Stony Brook scored seven of the next nine points to tie it up at 10-10. After the Golden Knights ended the Seawolves' run with three unanswered to make it 13-10, Stony Brook again bounced back with seven of the next eight points, including a pair of aces from Ayanna Pierre Louis. However, the Seawolves' 17-14 lead did not last long as Army came back to reach set point at 24-21. Stony Brook did manage to tie it back up at 24-24, but in the end it was the Golden Knights who came out on top in the lengthy tiebreaker.

SET 3 | Facing a potential sweep, Stony Brook rallied back to pull within two sets to one, winning their first set of the day 25-16. The Seawolves grabbed control of the set early when the score was 3-2 and held the lead the rest of the way to win 25-16. An early 7-0 scoring run set the tone for the rest of the set, with Pierre Louis recording back-to-back aces to end the run. Stony Brook totaled 12 kills in the set, led by Anderson with five.

SET 4 | The Seawolves could not keep the momentum going to force a fifth set as they narrowly lost set four 26-24 to drop the match. Both teams were deadlocked throughout the set as the score wound up tied 15 times while neither team took a lead larger than two points. Offensively, Stony Brook was at its best in the set, owing 17 of its 24 points to kills, led by Moore with eight. Moore's final kill got the Seawolves to set point at 24-23, only for Amry to rally back and score three in a row to take the set.

Game Notes
» Stony Brook had five players in double figures in digs, led by Madison Cigna with 19.
» Pierre Louis led the team with four aces and six blocks.
» Zamora has already topped 200 assists on the season through just seven matches, ending the day with 203.
