Seawolves Fall in Saturday Morning Match vs. St. Thomas

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Stony Brook volleyball team could not come out on top in its Saturday morning matchup with St. Thomas as it fell 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 15-25, 12-25) on day two of the Bryant Invitational.

The non-conference loss dropped Stony Brook to 3-5 on the season.

The Seawolves attack was paced by Quinn Anderson, who finished with 12 kills on the day, and by Kali Moore, who had 10. Defensively, had two players reach double figures in digs as Zayda Fuertez had 12 and Madison Cigna had 10.

How It Happened

SET 1 | Stony Brok battled back from an early 5-0 hole to soon tie up the first set 8-8 before scoring five in a row to take its first lead of the day at 13-10. Six different Seawolves score at least one kill during this run, including two from Moore. Unfortunately, the lead would not last long as the Tommies proceeded to outscore Stony Brook 15-6 over the remained of the set to win it 25-19.

SET 2 | The Seawolves evened things up with a come-from-behind 25-21 victory in set two. After a 7-0 UST run made it 7-2, Stony Brook gradually fought back to tie it 10-10 thanks in part to a pair of aces from Cigna. After going back and forth for several points, the Seawolves tied it up at 17-17 before taking a 20-17 lead on kills from Mercedes Motton and Anderson. Stony Brook's third ace of the set, courtesy of Ava Zamora, got it to set point, before a Tommies' service error sealed the win for Stony Brook.

SET 3 | The momentum did not last long, though, as St. Thomas responded to win set number three 25-15. the Seawolves could not get into a rhythm offensively and quickly found themselves trailing by nine at 17-8. A 4-0 run featuring back-to-back aces from Moore did cut the lead down to five at 17-12, but it was not enough to fully get Stony Brook back in the set.

SET 4 | The Seawolves did not have another comeback in them as the fourth set played out just like the third in a 25-12 loss. The Seawolves trailed by as many as 13 points as St. Thomas grabbed the advantage for good at 5-4 and Stony Brook was not able to recover despite multiple kills from Moore and Anderson.

Game Notes
» Anderson has posted back-to-back matches with double-digit kills for the first time this season. Meanwhile, Moore has now posted 10+ kills three times in a row for the second time this year.
» Moore is just one kill shy of reaching 100 on the season, while Cigna is three digs away from 100.
» Stony Brook attackers were helped by a team-high 17 assists from Zamora.
