Seawolves Drop Five-Set Match to Northeastern

STONY BROOK, NY --The Stony Brook volleyball team dropped its first home match of the season on Saturday when it fell in five sets (25-17, 17-25, 25-21, 20-25, 6-15) to Northeastern.

The loss dropped Stony Brook's record to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in the CAA.

The Seawolves were led by a double-double from Kali Moore, who registered 15 kills and 10 digs on the day. Quinn Anderson also added 13 kills to help the offense. 

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Seawolves grabbed control on the first point and never looked back to win the first set 25-17. Moore and Lei Lasike each had two early kills to give Stony Brook a 10-5 lead. The lead soon grew to 17-8 as Moore added two more kills, while Madison Cigna picked up the second Seawolves ace of the day. Moore notched one more kill to get it to set point, at which point a Huskies attack error closed out the set.

SET 2 | Stony Brook fell behind 3-0 at the start of the second set and was never able to come back and take the lead. The set was tied early at 10-10 thanks to another ace from Cigna and a kill from Anderson, only for a 5-0 Northeastern run to cut the comeback short and put the Huskies in front for good.

SET 3 | Stony Brook put the second-set loss behind and took a 2-1 match lead with a 25-20 win in the third set. The Seawolves led for the entire set, starting with a 4-0 run. on in the set to earn a 25-21 victory. The Seawolves attack was at its best in the third as the team racked up 15 kills, including four kills from Lasike and three kills each for Moore, Anderson, and Liv Hertzog. While Northeastern did manage to keep it close through the middle of the set, cutting the lead to one, Stony Brook's attack regained control of the court and finished off the set with two more kills from Moore and Anderson.

SET 4 | Stony Brook could not finish off a four-set win as the Huskies forced a fifth set with a 25-20 victory. The Seawolves fell behind early and could not recover as a 7-6 lead soon turned into an 11-7 deficit that held for the rest of the set. Three-straight Northeastern service errors helped keep Stony Brook in it as the score sat at 17-16, but the Huskies responded with a 5-0 run to regain their momentum and hold on for the win.

SET 5 | After a close start to the final set with both teams tied at 2-2, Northeastern proceeded to score eight of the next 10 to take a 10-4 lead. A kill from Mercedes Motton and another from Moore accounted for the only scoring the Seawolves had in the rest of the set as the Huskies completed the comeback with a 15-6 win.

Game Notes
» Moore now has five double-doubles on the season and six matches in a row with double-digit kills.
» Stony Brook got a team-high 10 digs from Cigna.
»  Zamora paced the team with 28 assists.
