Seawolves Open Weekend with Win Over Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. - The Stony Brook volleyball team stormed back after losing the first set to secure a 3-1 win (22-25, 25-19, 25-10, 25-18) over Hampton on Friday down in Virginia.

The victory boosted the Seawolves' record to 6-6 overall and 2-1 in the CAA

The Seawolves were led by a double-double from Kali Moore, who registered 13 kills and 15 digs on the day. Quinn Anderson also added 15 kills to help the offense, while Mopelola Ojo made the most of her first career start by reaching double-digit kills as well with 10.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Seawolves fell in a back-and-forth first set, losing 25-22 after coming up on the wrong side of seven different lead changes. Back-to-back kills from Moore followed by two straight aces from Ava Zamora put Stony Brook in front 22-21, but that was as close as the team would get as the Pirates rattled off four points in a row to claim the set.

SET 2 | Stony Brook immediately responded with a 25-19 victory in set two, evening the match at one set apiece. The Seawolves grabbed control of the set lead early on at 3-2 and never trailed again. Zayda Fuertez did much of the heavy lifting in the set as she fired four consecutive aces and five total during a 7-0 scoring run to make it 12-5. Thanks to multiple kills from Anderson and Ojo down the stretch, Hampton was unable to get back into the set as the Seawolves cruised to victory.

SET 3 | The Seawolves had their most dominant set of the night in the third as they once again took an early lead and road it to a 25-10 win. Fuertez's sixth ace of the evening capped off an early run that made it 10-3 Stony Brook. From there the attack never let up as the team out-killed Hampton 15-4, with Moore leading the way with six followed by Lei Lasike with three.

SET 4 | The final set was more of the same for the Seawolves as they again started things off by taking a 10-3 lead as Lasike and Anderson both racked up three kills apiece. The lead soon reached 11 points as aces from CJ Block and Madison Cigna, as well as a block from Hanna Berkefelt made it 17-6. Though the Pirates were able to cut the lead in half, eventually getting within five, it was too little too late as Zamora finished off the night with one final block to win the set 25-18.
