Kono Scores Twice, Seawolves Earn Draw on the Road at URI

KINGSTON, R.I. - Stony Brook got a pair of goals from Ryota Kono in a 2-2 draw against Rhode Island on Tuesday on the road at URI Soccer Complex. Kono's goals represented all of Stony Brook's scoring and were the first two of his collegiate career.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Stony Brook took a 1-0 lead when Kono scored in the 35th minute. Caleb Danquah played a grounded ball through the box that found the foot of Kono and the back of the net to open the scoring in Kingston. The Seawolves carried a 1-0 lead into the half. Rushon Sandy stopped the only shot he faced in the opening 45 minutes, though the Rams totaled seven shots in the first half.

Rhode Island evened the game on a goal from Kyler Vojvodic 15 minutes into the second half before Kono struck for a second time. Stony Brook went ahead 2-1 on Kono's 70th-minute goal, his second of the evening. Ryan Farr assisted the goal with an unselfish pass to his left that Kono buried into the right side of the cage.

The Rams again knotted it up, this time with just over 10 minutes to play, on Vojvodic's second tally of the night. Rhode Island pressured late on the offensive end, but it was Stony Brook that had the final chance. Kono was turned away after his attempt at a hat trick was deflected and then sent away by the URI keeper.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Kono scored both of the Seawolves' goals, the first two of his collegiate career. The two tallies increased his point total for the season to five, a new career-best mark offensively.
  • Sandy recorded four saves for the Seawolves out of 15 total Rams shots. Three of his four saves came during the second half.
  • Stony Brook did not have a corner kick and conceded three opportunities to Rhode Island.
  • The match featured a combined 28 fouls and seven yellow cards between the two programs.
