Seawolves Drop First Match of 2025 vs. Northern Iowa

DALLAS, Texas - The Stony Brook volleyball team lost its first match of the 2025 season today when it fell to the Northern Iowa in straight sets (14-25, 18-25, 12-25) in day one of the DoubleTree Invitational hosted by SMU in Moody Coliseum.

With this loss, Stony Brook is now 3-1 on the season.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Seawolves found themselves in an early deficit, losing a tough first set 25-14. Stony Brook trailed by as many as 12 points as Northern Iowa grabbed the advantage for good at 2-1 in a set that was notted up just once before the Panthers took control.

SET 2 | Stony Brook lost the second set 25-18 to gall into a 2-0 hole in the match. Stony Brook took a 3-0 lead to start the set after opening kills from Mercedes Motton and Kali Moore, followed by an ace from Ava Zamora. After falling behind by six later in the set, the Seawolves had their longest run of the day with four-straight points to cut the Panthers' lead to 16-14. This would be the closest the team would get, however, as UNI held on to take the set.

SET 3 | The Seawolves were unable to force a fourth set as the Panthers took the final set 25-12. Stony Brook found itself trailing 8-2 early on and could not rally back. Liv Hertzog Aajaylah Zeno picked up the Seawolves' lone kills in the final set.

Game Notes
» Zamora led Stony Brook with 12 digs and 12 assists.
» With her fourth kill of the match, Moore officially topped 1200 career kills.
