Seawolves Top Towson to Extend Winning Streak, Match Program’s Best-Ever Start to CAA Play

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook women's basketball picked up its fifth consecutive win on Sunday afternoon, defeating Towson in a CAA clash 55-43 at Stony Brook Arena. The Seawolf defense led the way, holding the Tigers to just 27.2% shooting from the field and 8.7% from beyond the arc.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Stony Brook's defense set the tone early, controlling the pace of play from the get-go, as strong offensive play in the paint gave Stony Brook a 9-4 lead heading into the second quarter. The Seawolves' defense smothered Towson in the first, allowing only four points, the fewest in a quarter against a Division I opponent this season.

Towson continued to keep things close early in the second, cutting its deficit to five with 7:21 remaining in the quarter. Stony Brook responded with a 9-3 run just over two minutes later, thanks to a trifecta of three-pointers capped off by a make from deep by Caitlin Frost, giving the Seawolves a 22-11 lead at the 5:18 mark of the second quarter.

Both teams traded buckets back and forth to end the quarter, as Stony Brook took a 31-21 lead into the break.

Defense reigned supreme on both sides during the third quarter, with the Seawolves holding their double-digit advantage for much of the third, until Towson scored the final three points of the quarter in the six seconds as things headed to the fourth with Stony Brook leading 40-31.

After the Tigers opened the scoring in the final quarter, the Seawolves went on a 6-0 run, finished off by a Frau Garcia layup, to grow the lead to 46-33 with 5:30 to go in the contest. The Tigers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Seawolves still cruised the rest of the way for the 55-43 win.
