STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook women's basketball team, led by stout defensive play, took down CAA Foe Drexel in its CAA Home Opener Friday night, defeating the Dragons 57-53 at Stony Brook Arena.
How It Happened
After falling behind 11-7, Stony Brook went on a 5-0 run with 2:30 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Berete, to take a 12-11 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.
Drexel responded by taking a 24-22 lead before Stony Brook went on a 7-0 run starting at the 1:33 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Chloe Oliver, to take a 29-24 lead, a score that would hold until halftime.
The Dragons opened the third quarter with a quick five points to even things up at 29-29. The Seawolves answered right back with a 5-0 run of their own, punctuated by a three from Berete, to grab a 34-29 lead with 7:36 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period. Drexel continued to cut into the Stony Brook, but was unable to even things up or take an advantage, as the Seawolves entered the fourth quarter with a 43-40 lead.
Both teams traded a pair of buckets back and forth to open the fourth with the Dragons trailing 48-44 with 7:18 remaining. Stony Brook extended its lead to seven with 5:26 remaining following the first career three-pointer by Delaney Cooper. Drexel was unable to overcome this deficit as the Stony Brook defense held strong, securing the 57-53 victory.
STATS AND NOTES
- Diaka Berete notched a double-double for the Seawolves with 18 points and 10 rebounds, as she led the team in both rebounds and points scored.
- The Seawolves held the Dragons to only 37.7 percent shooting from the field.
- Stony Brook kept Drexel to just 18.8% shooting from beyond the arc, as it the Dragons shot just 3-of-16 from deep.
- The Seawolves never trailed in the second half.
- Stony Brook recorded an assist on 90 percent of made baskets, totaling a game-high 19 assists.
- Caitlin Frost dished out a team-high five assists for the Seawolves.
- Janay Brantley added seven points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals in the win.
