STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Three-point shooting and a strong defensive effort propelled Stony Brook women's basketball to its third consecutive CAA win Sunday afternoon, as the Seawolves defeated North Carolina A&T, 56-51, at Stony Brook Arena.
Stony Brook had three players score in double figures, led by Caitlin Frost, who had 15 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Sandra Frau Garcia tacked on 12 points, eight assists, and two steals, and Chloe Oliver helped out with 12 points and six rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 14-2, Stony Brook went on a 9-0 run with 3:52 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Nal'La Bennett, to narrow its deficit to 14-11. N.C. A&T answered back and added to its lead with a basket at the horn, leaving the Seawolves down 19-13 entering the second quarter.
N.C. A&T kept adding to that lead, building a 21-13 advantage before Stony Brook went on a 6-0 run to narrow its deficit to 21-19. Despite this, the Aggies were able to hold onto their lead heading into the locker room, taking a 24-22 lead into the break.
Stony Brook came out of halftime firing on all cylinders, going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Oliver, to grab a 29-24 lead with 8:33 to go in the third. Following the Seawolves' early run in the quarter, N.C. A&T battled back to make things a one-point game with 48 seconds remaining. Stony Brook responded, scoring the final three points of the third, taking a 43-39 advantage into the final quarter of play.
The Aggies did not go down with a fight, scoring six of the first eight points in the fourth to even things at 45-45 with 5:05 remaining. Stony Brook regained the lead less than a minute thanks to a free throw and bucket from Delaney Cooper, as the Seawolves led 48-45 with 4:14 left to play.
N.C. A&T continued to battle, but was unable to retake the lead as a clutch three-pointer from Oliver and free throws from Frau Garcia secured the win for Stony Brook.
STATS AND NOTES
- Frost led the Seawolves with a game-high 15 points. She also drained four three-pointers, setting a new career best mark.
- Oliver scored 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, including a perfect 2-of-2 performance from three-point range.
- Frau Garcia posted a 12-point performance. She also dished out a season-high eight assists on the day.
- The Seawolves made more than half of their attempts from three-point range, knocking down 8-of-15 shots.
- Stony Brook held the Aggies to only 38.9 percent shooting from the field.
- The Seawolves had a 30-29 edge on the boards in the win.
- Stony Brook's defense forced 17 turnovers and tallied five blocks as a team.
