HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — The Stony Brook women's basketball team picked up its fourth straight win on Friday night, defeating Hofstra 61-44 in the inaugural Battle of Long Island.
Three Seawolves scored in double figures, led by
Diaka Berete with 15 points.
Sandra Frau Garcia added 13 points and six assists, while
Caitlin Frost recorded a double-double with 11 points and a season-high 16 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless opening two minutes, Berete got Stony Brook on the board with a jumper in the paint and later buried a three to give the Seawolves a 5-0 lead. The defense set the tone early, holding Hofstra without a field goal for the first five minutes. Frost controlled the paint in the opening quarter, while Frau Garcia scored late to give Stony Brook a 10-7 edge after one.
Hofstra tied the game early in the second quarter, but Frost answered with back-to-back baskets. After the Pride briefly took the lead,
Delaney Cooper tied the game at 16-16. Late in the half, Frost knocked down a three and Cooper added a jumper as Stony Brook closed the quarter on a run, holding Hofstra scoreless over the final 3:22 to take a 23-18 lead into halftime.
The Seawolves opened the second half with momentum as Frau Garcia scored early and Berete reached double figures. Frost later connected from deep to give Stony Brook its first double-digit lead, and the Seawolves carried a 37-28 advantage into the fourth.
Hofstra trimmed the deficit to five in the final quarter, but Frost and
Chloe Oliver responded with three-pointers to regain control. Frau-Garcia added an and-one and capped the night with a late steal and layup as Stony Brook pulled away for the 61-44 win.
STATS AND NOTES
- Berete recorded her third double-digit scoring performance in the last four games and is now second on the team at 10.1 points per game.
- Frau Garcia posted at least four assists for the fourth straight game and leads the team at 4.4 assists per contest.
- Frost continued her strong stretch with her first career 16-rebound performance.
- Stony Brook held Hofstra to just 18 first-half points and 27.6 percent shooting before finishing the night shooting 51.1 percent from the field.
- The Seawolves improve to 4-1 in CAA play, their best start since the 2023-24 season, and have now won four straight games, the longest streak of the Joy McCorvey era.
