Stony Brook Bested by Charleston on Saturday

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Seawolves could not take down the CAA's top team on Saturday as they battled hard but fell 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-13).

Mercedes Motton led the team in kills for the second day in a row with seven. She was also tied with Damisi Osibodu for the team lead in blocks with three.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Seawolves were unable to get into an offensive rhythm in set one, coming away with just eight kills in the frame, including two each for Osibodu and Lei Lasike. Meanwhile, the Cougars built a substantial 15-6 lead halfway through, holding Stony Brook to just two kills and on block in the remainder of the set.

SET 2 | Initially coming out with a 5-5 tie, Stony Brook soon fell behind as Charleston scored nine of the next 10 to make it 14-6. A 5-0 run featuring back-to-back aces from Carey-Jean Block would cut the lead down to just three, before another extended run later on made it just 21-19. Back-to-back kills from Motton followed by a block by Ella Sanders would eventually tie it up 23-23, but in the end two Stony Brook attack errors would give the set to Charleston.

SET 3 | Osibodu and Pierre Louis each picked up another two kills at the start of the set to give the Seawolves their first lead since the opening point of the day at 6-5. Later, with the score tied 8-8, Charleston went on a 10-0 run to retake the lead for good as the Cougars completed the sweep.

Notable Stats

  • Osibodu fnished today with exactly 100 total blocks on the season, making her the first Seawolf since Taylor Gillie in 2014 to reach the century mark in a single season.
  • Sanders continues to approach 800 career kills as she ended the day with 794.
  • Block picked up six digs to top 300 in her career.
