STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Continuing to earn midseason accolades, redshirt freshman defensive end Khalid Bueno has been named to the Jerry Rice Award Watch List which recognizes the top freshman in FCS football.

Bueno becomes the third player in program history to be nominated for the Jerry Rice Award, joining wide receiver Anthony Johnson in 2023 and linebacker Tyler King in 2021. Both Johnson and King were finalists for the award. The Philadelphia native is also one of three CAA players named to the watch list, joining North Carolina A&T linebacker Donovan Frederick and Elon running back Kamerin McDowell-Moore.

This marks Bueno's fourth midseason honor. The defensive end was previously named a Phil Steele Midseason First-Team All-American, FCS Midseason Defensive Player of the Year and Midseason Rookie of the Year.

Bueno currently leads the nation with 10.5 sacks and 16.0 tackles for loss. He has also recorded 36 total tackles, nine quarterback hurries and two forced fumbles for the Seawolves. Bueno has tallied at least two sacks in four of Stony Brook's seven games.

The rookie is tied for fourth in program history for most sacks in a single season and tied for fifth in tackles for loss. He has already set program records for most sacks and tackles for loss by a redshirt freshman.

The Jerry Rice Award is named after the Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver who starred at the FCS level at Mississippi Valley State. Past recipients include Cooper Kupp, Chase Edmonds, Trey Lance, Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders.

True and redshirt freshmen are eligible for the Jerry Rice Award. A national media panel will select the winner from a group of finalists following the regular season.

The Seawolves return to action this Saturday when they travel to Smithfield, R.I., to take on Bryant. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. on FloCollege. Stony Brook will look to earn its sixth straight win over the Bulldogs and improve on its 5-1 all-time record against Bryant.
