HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — The Stony Brook men's soccer team erupted for three goals in an eight-minute span in the second half to earn a 3-0 road victory over Hofstra on Saturday at Captains Field. With the win, the Seawolves improved to 5-1-5 overall and 2-1-2 in CAA play.
After the two sides played to a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Stony Brook broke through in the 60th minute.
Nelson Reynoso found the back of the net at the 59:12 mark off an assist from
Ryan Farr, giving the Seawolves a 1-0 advantage.
Stony Brook doubled its lead less than seven minutes later. Farr was involved again, combining with Reynoso to set up
Alex Fleury, who buried his opportunity at 65:57 to put the Seawolves ahead 2-0.
The Seawolves wasted little time adding another. Just 1:40 after Fleury's goal, Farr converted from the penalty spot in the 68th minute to extend Stony Brook's advantage to 3-0 and cap the scoring barrage. Farr finished the afternoon with a goal and two assists, playing a part in all three Stony Brook goals.
Stony Brook's defense took care of the rest.
Heidar Hermannsson played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded four saves to preserve the clean sheet. Hofstra generated 13 shots, including four on target, but was unable to find a way past Hermannsson and the Seawolves' back line.
The Pride applied pressure late, forcing Hermannsson into saves in the 75th and 85th minutes, but the Stony Brook goalkeeper turned away each opportunity to keep Hofstra off the scoreboard.
Stony Brook finished with 10 shots, placing four on goal, while Hofstra held a 13-10 advantage in total attempts and a 9-2 edge in corner kicks. The Seawolves made their opportunities count, scoring on three of their four shots on target.
