Softball Opens Another Weekend in Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Stony Brook opened its second straight Florida today with two losses in the Jacksonville/UNF Invitational. Game one saw the Seawolves fall 11-3 to Princeton, before game two ended in a 5-1 loss to the host Jacksonville.

How It Happened (Game 1 vs. Princeton)

  • Putting up a three-spot with a home run and a double in the first, the Tigers took an early lead and never looked back. Stony Brook starter Aubrey Jepson did bounce back after the first by retiring the side in order in the bottom of the second with a pair of punch outs.
  • After Princeton tacked on another run in the third, Stony Brook came back and loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fourth. Though the team plated one on a passed ball, allowing Malorie Hill to come home, that would be the only run the Seawolves would get in the frame as two runners were left on base.
  • Following a seven-run bottom of the fourth, the Seawolves nearly kept the run rule from coming into effect after a two-out, two-run double from Rachael Brown made it 11-3. Despite loading the bases, however, Stony Brook was unable to get one more run to extend the game.

How It Happened (Game 2 vs. Jacksonville)

  • The Seawolves struck first against the Dolphins after Elena Gonzalez reached on a one-out double and was brought home on an RBI single from Brown. Jacksonville, though, got that run right back in the bottom of the inning and tied it 1-1.
  • The Dolphins followed up with a four-run bottom the second to take a 5-1 lead. Jepson, who came in to relieve Crimson Rice, managed to limit the damage and strand three runners to end the inning.
  • Jepson and Melissa Reed would go on to toss three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. In the bottom of the sixth, Finch came in and worked around a couple of baserunners in a scoreless bottom of the sixth.
  • Ultimately, Stony Brook's bats were unable to rally back behind the solid relief pitching and went down in order in the seventh.

Stats and Notes

  • With three more RBIs today, Brown now has eight on the season.
  • Finch, making her season debut, tossed 1.1 scoreless innings in relief across both games.
  • Stony Brook's pitchers combined to strand 10 baserunners against Jacksonville.
