Seawolves Bounce Back With Gritty Home Win Over UNCW

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Fueled by a gritty defensive performance, Stony Brook women's basketball found its way back into the win column, defeating UNCW 60-55 at Stony Brook Arena on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Stony Brook opened play strong with a 7-0 run bookmarked by a three from Diaka Berete. This early advantage was short-lived as UNCW answered right back with a 14-0 run, giving itself a 14-7 lead with 3:37 left to go in the first quarter. As the first came to a close, the Seawolves were able to retake the lead thanks to a three by Janay Brantley, giving them an 18-17 lead into the second.

Things started slowly in the second quarter, as neither team generated much on offense. Stony Brook was able to score five of the first seven points of the seoncd giving them a 24-19 lead at the first media timeout. The Seawolves' defense continued to hold the Seahawks' offense at bay throughout the remainder of the quarter, giving them a 28-21 lead at the halftime break.

UNCW began the third with a quick 10-4 run, cutting Stony Brook's lead to one as it held a 32-31 lead with 6:25 remaining in the quarter. The Seawolves scored the next five points to take a 37-31 lead, only for the Seahawks to answer with five straight, leaving Stony Brook ahead by one with 2:50 remaining. UNCW closed the quarter by scoring the final three points to even things at 39-39 heading into the final quarter of play.

The Seawolves came roaring out of the gate in the fourth with a dominant 10-1 run in the opening minutes, capped off by a and-one conversion by Chloe Oliver. The Seahawks responded right back with a quick 10-0 run as Stony Brook held a 51-50 lead with 3:04 left to play. Following that, the Seawolves were to ice the game with six free throws in the final 1:15, securing the 60-55 win over UNCW.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Berete scored a team-high 17 points for Stony Brook and also grabbed four offensive rebounds.
  • Brantley tallied 15 points and seven rebounds in the win. She has now scored at least 15 points in four out of the last five games.
  • Melissa Mwanza scored a season-high nine points and grabbed seven rebounds, including five offensive.
  • Stony Brook forced 22 UNCW turnovers, scoring 28 points off of them.
  • The Seawolves dominated the glass, outrebounding the Seahawks 44-27.
  • 25 of Stony Brook's 44 rebounds came on the offensive glass, a +20 advantage compared to UNCW.
  • The Seawolves scored 20 second-chance points and allowed only four to the Seahawks.
  • Stony Brook's bench outscored UNCW's 18-4.
