STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook women's lacrosse downed No. 15 Colorado, 9-7, on Thursday afternoon, giving head coach
Joe Spallina the 300th career win of his collegiate coaching career.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Keira Martin opened the day's scoring, converting on a woman-up opportunity to give Stony Brook the early 1-0 lead. Colorado would even things up on a free-position goal with 4:31 left to go in the first quarter. Strong defense on both ends dictated the rest of the first quarter, as neither team could convert on their chances.
The Buffaloes jumped in front 2-1 just 40 seconds into the second, scoring on the first shot of the quarter. This lead would be short-lived, as the Seawolves responded with a goal a little over three minutes later, from
Reese Hjertaas, drawing things even at 2-2. Stony Brook then regained the lead following a free-position goal from
Isabella Caporuscio at the 9:54 mark of the second quarter. Colorado answered right back with a goal three minutes later, making things a 3-3 game. The tie lasted only 31 seconds as
Zoe Stonecipher buried a free-position goal, putting the Seawolves in front 4-3 with 5:47 left in the second. Once again, the lead was short-lived following a goal by the Buffaloes, which drew things even at 4-4 two minutes after the Stonecipher goal. The Seawolves would get the last laugh in the first half as Caporuscio forced a turnover and then fired in a goal with 49 seconds left, giving Stony Brook a one-goal lead at the break.
Coming out of the locker room, the Seawolves snatched momentum with three goals in the opening 4:26 of the third, pushing the Stony Brook advantage to 8-4. Neither team found the back of the net during the final 10:34 of the third quarter as the Seawolves took a four-goal lead into the fourth.
Stony Brook pushed its advantage to five with the opening goal of the fourth courtesy of
Olivia Schorr. Colorado did not go down without a fight, scoring the next three goals, as Stony Brook led 9-7 with 5:27 left to play. The Seawolf defense held strong in the final five minutes, securing the 9-7 win for Stony Brook and the 300th career win for Spallina.
