STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook women's basketball recorded its 13th home win of the season on Sunday afternoon, as clutch fourth-quarter contributions paved the way to a 62-58 Senior Day win over Elon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Stony Brook scored the game's opening basket, Elon scored the next six points, leading 6-2 about halfway through the opening quarter. The Phoenix would continue to extend their lead, going up seven with under two minutes remaining in the first. The Seawolves were able to cut their deficit to just one at 17-16 heading into the second after making five of their last six shots to close out the first quarter.
Just 26 seconds into the second, Stony Brook jumped back in front courtesy of a three from
Caitlin Frost, making it 19-17 in favor of the Seawolves. Both teams then dug in on the defensive end for much of the remainder of the quarter, as Stony Brook led 24-21 with under three to play in the first half. Elon scored six of the next eight points, taking a 27-26 lead with 28 seconds left in the second. Frost connected on a three-point attempt before the second quarter, giving the Seawolves a 29-27 lead at the half.
Offense picked up on both sides in the opening stretch of the third quarter, three makes from deep for Stony Brook, and a stretch of six consecutive baskets for Elon kept things close, as things were dead even at 39-39 with 4:43 remaining in the third. The Phoenix was able to retake the lead with five makes from the charity stripe, going up 46-43 heading into the fourth quarter.
Each team traded a pair of baskets to begin the fourth as the Phoenix led 50-47 with 6:23 left to play. Continuing to battle back, Stony Brook evened things up at 52-52 after a three-pointer from
Diaka Berete. Clutch play from Berete continued as she drilled a tough three, making 56-52 in favor of the Seawolves with 2:50 remaining. Elon was unable to overcome the late-game deficit with Stony Brook putting the game away at the free-throw line.
