Brown Homers Twice as Stony Brook Sweeps FDU in Home Opener Doubleheader

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Seawolves opened up their home slate with a bang on Tuesday as they swept both games of the doubleheader against FDU (10-2, 3-1) in the first ever games on the newly renovated University Field.

Rachael Brown led the offense with an astounding 5-for-6 day at the plate with two home runs, three RBIs, and four runs across both games.

How It Happened (Game 1)

  • Stony Brook took and early and never looked back after Brown mashed her first home run to straightaway center to plate two in the bottom of the first.
  • Though the Knights got a pair of unearned runs back the next inning, the Seawolves immediately responded in the bottom of the second with a two-out rally culminating in a infield RBI single from Malorie Hill and a error on a Brown grounder to short which plated another.
  • Stony Brook made it 6-2 the very next inning when Ashlyn Burgess and Naiah Ackerman perfectly executed the double steal which allowed the former to swipe home, before the latter came in to score on a double from Marissa Thalassinos.
  • After Burgess grew the lead to 7-2 with a sac fly in the fourth, the Seawolves put the game away for good in the sixth as Karri Pritchard laced a two-run double to left to get the winning run on base. June McGrath then came in to pinch hit and blooped one to right, plating Burgess and sealing the walk-off run-rule victory.
  • All the while, Aubrey Jepson held things down in the circle with six innings and six strikeouts.

How It Happened (Game 2)

  • Once again, the Seawolves struck early in the bottom of the first as another two-out rally led to two runs scoring. Emma Scheitinger doubled down the right field line to bring in one run, before Pritchard sent the first pitch she saw to left to make it 2-0.
  • Neither team would score over the next three innings as Jayci Finch silenced FDUs bats, retiring nine in a row at one point.
  • After a successful double steal attempt by the Knights got them on the board in the top of the fifth, Brown came up with the insurance run in the bottom half of the inning as she worked a full count and sent one to over the wall in center nearly the same spot as her home run in the first game.
  • From there, Finch did not allow another hit in the game as she got through the final two innings unscathed to complete the sweep.

Stats and Notes

  • Jepson earned her first career win after not allowing an earned run in game one. Her season ERA is now 3.02, while her team-leading strikeout total reaches 37.
  • Finch picked up her second win after her second complete game of the year, further lowering her ERA to 2.35 in the process.
  • Behind Brown, Pritchard was Stony Brook's next best hitter of the day, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
  • Across both games, the Seawolves totaled five extra-base hits.
