STONY BROOK, N.Y. — A dominant second-half performance paved the way to victory for Stony Brook men's lacrosse as it took down Hofstra 12-7 in the Battle of Long Island on Friday Night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Hofstra scored within the first two minutes of play, taking an early 1-0 lead. Stony Brook answered right back with a goal of its own, 21 seconds later, to tie the game. Later in the first quarter, the Pride tallied the next two goals in the span of 38 seconds to go in front 3-1 with 4:30 remaining in the opening quarter. Capitalizing on a Hofstra penalty, the Seawolves closed out the first quarter scoring on a man-up goal from
Brendan Marino.
The lone goal of the second quarter was scored by the Pride, increasing their advantage to 4-2. Good goalkeeping and defense by both teams kept their offenses at bay for the rest of the quarter.
Stony Brook broke its scoring drought with the first goal of the third quarter, after
Caleb Yeung caused a turnover, scooped up a ground ball, and fired in a goal in one fell swoop. Later in the quarter, the Seawolves retook the lead with three straight goals in less than three and a half minutes, giving them a 6-4 lead with 7:21 remaining in the third quarter. Hofstra scored two of the final three goals of the quarter, as Stony Brook led 7-6 going into the final quarter of play.
Just like the third quarter, Yeung opened the scoring in the fourth, putting the Seawolves back up two. The Pride scored again a few minutes later to make it 8-7 Stony Brook with 9:28 remaining. The one-goal deficit would be as close as Hofstra would get for the rest of the game, as the Seawolves scored the next four goals to secure the 12-7 victory.
