STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook men's lacrosse came up short on Saturday, falling to Towson 13-10 at LaValle Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tigers got things going with the first goal of the game to take the early lead. The Seawolves answered right back a little over a minute later with a wrap-around goal from
Collin Williamson, tying the game at 1-1. That goal would spark the Stony Brook attack as they tallied another two goals in the span of 41 seconds, making it 3-1 Seawolves with 7:19 remaining in the opening quarter. Each team scored one more goal in the quarter as Stony Brook held a 4-2 lead after one quarter of play.
The Seawolves started the second quarter with a bang, scoring 18 seconds in courtesy of a goal from
Justin Bonacci, set up by a caused turnover by
Robbie Smith. Towson and Stony Brook then traded one goal each, with the Seawolves still leading at 6-3 with 9:13 remaining in the first half. Two straight goals from the Tigers, including one in the closing seconds of the half, cut the lead to 6-5 heading into halftime.
Both teams had scoring chances in the opening five minutes of the third quarter, but were turned away. Towson was able to break through, tying the game at 6-6 with 9:24 left to go in the quarter. Three minutes later, the Tigers took their first lead since the game's opening goal, scoring a man-up goal to go ahead 7-6.
Tanner Williams drew things even again, not even two minutes later, but Towson scored again a few minutes after to retake the lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Tigers were able to increase their lead to 11-7 with the first three goals of the fourth quarter. Stony Brook did not go down without a fight, scoring three straight goals in 40 seconds with Towson now leading 11-10 with 4:39 left to play. The one-goal deficit did not last as the Tigers scored just 27 seconds later, going back up two. Towson added one more goal in the final minute, closing out the game and winning by a final score of 13-10.
STATS AND NOTES
- Williamson scored two goals and handed out three assists for a team-high five points.
- Williams posted a multi-goal game with his two goals.
- Jake Lewis scored two goals on two shots on goal.
- Bonacci, Brian Bradley, Brendan Marino, and Jack Cavalieri rounded out the Seawolves scorers with one goal apiece.
- Smith went 16-of-25 in the face-off circle and scooped up a game-best 12 ground balls while also causing three turnovers.
- Tommy Wilk recorded 12 saves in goal.
- The Tigers outshot Stony Brook 40-32.
