STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Seawolves stay undefeated at home this year after taking both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Hampton with a massive 14-2 win in game one, followed by a closer 5-3 triumph in game two.
How It Happened (Game 1)
- The Seawolves got on the board early as the team's top two hitters Rachael Brown and Karri Pritchard each drove in a run on a double and a single, respectively.
- The very next inning, Stony Brook erupted on offense, sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring seven. Elena Gonzalez and Ella Hayes each ripped RBI singles, while the other five runs came on an error by the pitcher and four walks.
- In the bottom of the third, the Seawolves crossed into double digits as Ashlyn Burgess laced one to left to make it 10-0, before three more bases-loaded walks ballooned the score to 13-0.
- Gonzalez would drive in the 14th and final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth with a single up the middle.
- Meanwhile, Aubrey Jepson turned in another outstanding performance on the mound, retiring the first six batters of the day. Though the Pirates broke through for two runs in the fourth, it was nowhere near enough to get them back into the game at that point as Jepson finished strong.
How It Happened (Game 2)
- It was Hampton who struck first in game two as an error in the top of the first allowed two runs to come home and give the Pirates their first lead of the day. The lead was short lived, though, as Brown and Burgess soon tied it up in the bottom half of the inning on a sac fly and a single.
- While Hampton would retake the lead in the second off a solo home run, the Seawolves got a solo shot of their own from Gonzalez who crushed one over the center field wall for her first career home run.
- After a 1-2-3 inning from starter Jayci Finch in the third and a scoreless frame in the top of the fourth, the Seawolves took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning as another Pirates error allowed Emily Valentine to score and make it 4-3, before another double from Brown made it 5-3.
- Finch dug in over the final three innings and almost completely silenced the Pirates' bats, retiring eight in a row to finish off the doubleheader.
