STONY BROOK, N.Y. - In a 12-inning, three and a half hour marathon against Sacred Heart on Tuesday, the Seawolves were down to their final strike before a solo home run from Rachael Brown tied it and paved the way for Madelyn Stepski to walk it off in a 5-4 victory.
How It HappenedÂ
- Both teams drove in a run in the first, as Ashlyn Burgess tied it early with a two-out double to right center.
- Crimson Rice, who came in to relieve Aubrey Jepson after she left after just three pitches, proceeded to fire three straight scoreless frames, allowing just one one hit in this time.
- After the Pioneers regained the lead in the fifth, the Seawolves took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the sixth when Karri Pritchard laced one up the middle to drive home two and make it 3-2.
- Down to their final strike in the top of the seventh, the Pioneers managed to extend the game and force extras.
- Jayci Finch, who entered the game in the seventh, blanked Sacred Heart over the next four innings, stranding a runner in the eighth, ninth, and 10th, before working her first 1-2-3 inning in the 11th.
- Following four scoreless extra innings, the Pioneers broke through in the top of the 12th to take a 4-3 lead.
- After two quick outs in the bottom of the 12th, Brown stepped up to the plate and fell into an 0-2 count. Down to her final strike, she sent the next pitch over the wall in left to tie it once again.
- The next three Seawolves all reached, with Pritchard getting on after SHU's third baseman bobbled a routine grounder. This set the stage for Stepski who sent the second pitch she saw into the gap in left center to walk it off.
