WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. , -- The Seawolves scored five runs but couldn't hold off the Monmouth Hawks, who erupted for eight runs in the sixth inning, as Stony Brook fell 8–5 on Saturday afternoon.
Matthew Canizares (0-2) came out of the bullpen for Stony Brook (3-16, 2-6) and took the loss. Hunter Colagrande got the start and allowed two runs with five strikeouts over five innings. Aidan Colagrande was also a bright spot for the Seawolves, coming out of the bullpen and throwing 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing no hits, with one walk and four strikeouts.
At the plate, the Seawolves were paced by Jack Scheri, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double and two RBIs. Chanz Doughty put together a noteworthy effort as well, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Nick Zampieron also helped out for Stony Brook, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Seawolves got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Zampieron came across to score the lone run of the inning for Stony Brook and get them on the board after reaching on a single and stealing second and third base. He was brought home on a ground out from Mike Villani.
H. Colagrande got the start for Stony Brook and was dealing through the first two innings by stranding two runners in the first and another in the second inning. The Hawks failed to push any runs across before the Seawolves built on their lead in the third inning. Stony Brook scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Doughty, which brought the score to 2-0 in favor of the Seawolves.
After H. Colagrande left two runners on in the third and one in the fourth, Stony Brook again enlarged it's lead to 5-0 in the top of the fifth inning. The Seawolves scored three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-run single off the bat of Jack Scheri and another coming from Chanz Doughty single. The Seawolves were unable to hold the lead, as Monmouth scored eight times in the sixth inning to ultimately take a 8-5 victory on Saturday afternoon.
