STONY BROOK, N.Y. - With the score tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Stony Brook's best hitter, Rachael Brown, did what she has all season long and got the job done as she hit a soft grounder to bring home the winning run in the Seawolves' series opener vs. Towson on Friday.
How It Happened
- Both teams came out of the gate swinging in the first, as the Tigers quickly took a 2-0 lead after loading the bases. Stony Brook, though, responded in kind in the bottom of the inning as the first three hitters all reached base safely before Ashlyn Burgess brought in the first run with an RBI groundout, followed by an infield single from Malorie Hill and a single to right from Karri Pritchard.
- Neither team would score over the next four innings, as Crimson Rice recovered bounced back and only allowed two more hits through the fifth inning.
- With the Seawolves holding on to a one-run lead in the top of the sixth, the Tigers managed to tie things up on a sac fly. Jayci Finch came in to finish off the inning, successfully getting the final two outs to strand three.
- Finch would again work around trouble in the seventh, letting two on before shutting the door on the Tigers with one last punchout to keep it a tie game heading into the bottom of the seventh.
- After neither team had made an error all day, Towson committed two in the infield on back-to-back batters to start the seventh. A walk to Mia Vannelli would load up the bases and bring Brown to the plate. On an 0-1 count, she checked her swing and bounced the ball into no mans land on the infield, allowing pinch runner Emily Valentine to beat out the throw to the plate and win it for Stony Brook.
Stats and Notes
- Burgess' hitting streak is now up to nine games.
- Brown now has 21Â hits with 12 RBIs in her last 12Â games, helping the Seawolves to an 8-4 record in that span.
