STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook baseball team, backed by 4.1 scoreless innings of relief from
Ty Panariello, fell to Northeastern University, 4-0, this afternoon to open a three-game set at Joe Nathan Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Worley got the start for the Seawolves and, after issuing back-to-back walks to begin the game, the left-hander worked out of a bases-loaded jam with a groundout to third base.
- After the Seawolves went down in order in their first at-bat, Northeastern scored the game's first run. An error to open the inning later came around to score on a sacrifice fly, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
- Matthew Jackson recorded Stony Brook's first hit in the bottom of the second and stole both second and third base, but was stranded after a strikeout ended the threat.
- The Stony Brook left-hander went back to work in the top of the third, striking out a batter and stranding a runner at third with a lineout to right field to keep Northeastern off the board.
- Stony Brook again went down in order in the bottom of the third, and Worley returned to the mound for the fourth. The left-hander struck out two batters but allowed two walks, prompting the call to the bullpen for Ty Panariello. The Huskies added a run on a wild pitch, but Stony Brook threw out a runner at the plate to end the inning with Northeastern leading 2-0. Jackson drew a walk in the bottom of the fourth, but that was all the Seawolves managed in the frame.
- After allowing a leadoff double in the top of the fifth, Panariello caught the runner leaning at second base for the first out. He then surrendered a single that moved to second on a wild pitch, but recorded the final two outs with a strikeout and groundout.
- Nick Zampieron was hit by a pitch to begin the bottom of the fifth. Coffey moved him to second with a bunt, but Northeastern kept Stony Brook off the scoreboard with a pickoff and a groundout to end the inning.
- Panariello worked around a leadoff walk in the sixth to keep Northeastern scoreless and maintain the 2-0 deficit. The Seawolves were held in check again in the bottom half, going down in order to send the game to the seventh.
- Northeastern extended its lead to 3-0 in the top of the seventh after tallying two hits and capitalizing on a Stony Brook throwing error at first base that brought home a run. Chris Carson recorded a two-out single to right field in the bottom half, but the Seawolves were unable to push across a run after a flyout to center ended the inning.
- Panariello closed out his outing by retiring the Huskies in order in the eighth. He finished with 4.1 innings of relief, striking out four and allowing no earned runs.
- Following a scoreless bottom of the eighth for Stony Brook, Reilly Bridges entered the game. Northeastern led off the ninth with a triple and followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 4-0. Bridges recorded back-to-back strikeouts before Aidan Colagrande entered with a runner on third. Colagrande escaped the inning with a popout to end the threat.
- Pilla sparked a one-out rally in the ninth with a walk, and Doughty was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with two outs. However, Northeastern secured the 4-0 victory with a groundout to end the game.
