VESTAL, N.Y. — Stony Brook men's lacrosse notched its third consecutive win, defeating Binghamton, 9-6, on Saturday afternoon. The Seawolves were led offensively by
Kian McCoy's three points while defensively,
Tommy Wilk and the Stony Brook defense limited a third consecutive opponent to a single-digit goal total.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Binghamton opened the scoring after a couple empty Stony Brook possessions. The Seawolves responded with five unanswered goals over the final 10 minutes of the first quarter. Four different goal scorers, with two coming courtesy of Collin Williamson, put Stony Brook ahead by four after the initial 15 minutes of action.
Binghamton scored the lone goal of the second quarter, taking momentum into the intermission after holding the Seawolves scoreless for the entirety of the second stanza. Despite Stony Brook's offensive woes in the second quarter, it allowed just one goal to maintain a healthy advantage. Tommy Wilk made three saves in the period, holding off a Bearcats' comeback.
After the slow second quarter, the two sides traded goals in the opening two minutes of play to begin the second half. Stony Brook added three straight goals, getting tallies from Owen Donnellan, McCoy and Caleb Yeung, to extend its lead to six, the largest of the afternoon.
Binghamton ended Stony Brook's scoring run with a goal late in the third quarter, trimming its deficit to 9-4. The Bearcats held off Stony Brook offensively, shutting out the Seawolves in the fourth quarter, but Stony Brook's defense proved to be too much for the Bearcats in their comeback attempt.
Wilk stopped the first three shots he faced in the fourth quarter, keeping Binghamton well out of reach as the clock waned. The Bearcats scored twice in the final two minutes of play, including once with seven seconds remaining, to make it a more respectable final score.
