STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Despite nine combined goals from Justin Bonacci and Collin Williamson, the Stony Brook men's lacrosse team fell to Drexel, 17-13, on Saturday afternoon at LaValle Stadium. Prior to today's contest, the Seawolves celebrated their 15 seniors.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After conceding the game's first goal less than 90 seconds into action on Saturday afternoon, Stony Brook rattled off three straight, two of which came from Bonacci, to take an early 3-1 lead. The Seawolves' offense sputtered after the three-goal run, going nearly 15 minutes before finding the back of the net again, a stretch that spanned into the second quarter. Drexel used a 7-0 run during that time frame to turn the two-goal deficit into an 8-3 advantage in the scoring column.
Will Birney's goal snapped the scoring drought for the Seawolves and helped Stony Brook close out the second half stronger than it started. Facing a four-goal deficit coming out of intermission, Stony Brook scored three straight goals to make it a one-goal game again, forcing an early Drexel timeout.
The Dragons closed out the final nine-plus minutes of the third stanza with three of the period's final four goals, including a goal with zeroes on the clock after a Stony Brook turnover in the defensive third of the field.
Drexel's lead ballooned to six goals, 17-11, with six minutes to play. Stony Brook netted the final two goals of the contest, but was held scoreless for the final three minutes in an attempt to erase the four-goal deficit it faced.
