ELON, N.C. - The Seawolves got the weekend series at Elon started with a win on Friday as they held on a late push by the Phoenix to take the opener 3-2.
How It Happened
- Making her second start since returning from injury, Aubrey Jepson was sharp on the mound through four. After retiring her first seven batters in a row, she worked around an error and a single in the third to strand runners on second and third with a strikeout.Â
- Jepson finished a scoreless fourth thanks to a baserunning miscue which led to the runner getting doubled off second on an infield popup.
- In the top of the fifth, the Seawolves offense was able to break the stalemate after taking advantage of an Elon error to plate three. Naiah Ackerman and Marissa Thalassinos pulled off a perfectly executed squeeze play with the former bunting the latter home to begin the rally. Rachael Brown singled in the next one with an RBI single that just bounced out of the shortstop's glove, before Josie Alfano capped things off with an opposite field single.
- Now carrying a 3-0 lead, Jepson tossed a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fifth.
- The Phoenix managed to cut the lead down to one in the sixth after back-to-back singles made it 3-2. They would threaten again in the seventh after loading the bases with one out, but Crimson Rice got the final two batters to fly out and ground out to secure the save.
Stats and Notes
- Jepson earned her fourth win of the season, while Rice picked up her second save.
- Alfano now has two hits and three RBIs in her last two games.
