STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Hunter Colagrande and Aidan Colagrande dominated on Friday, combining to throw a complete game while striking out 11 and allowing just two runs to secure a 4-2 victory over UNCW at Joe Nathan Field.
In addition to tying his career-high with nine strikeouts, Colagrande (1-1) tossed six innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on eight hits and walking none for Stony Brook (9-18, 6-8). Aidan Colagrande also made an impact on the mound for the Seawolves, throwing three scoreless innings while allowing no hits, with no walks and two strikeouts to secure his first save of the season.
In the batter's box, the Seawolves were paced by Nicholas Dromboski, who went 1-for-1 on the day with a double, two walks and two RBI. Matthew Jackson furnished a standout effort as well, going 2-for-3. Jack Scheri also helped out for Stony Brook, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hunter Colagrande made his team-leading eighth start of the season. The right-hander struck out all three batters in the opening frame to start the afternoon. Chris Carson led off the bottom half of the first with a walk and advanced to second on an error by the UNCW pitcher. Mike Villani moved him to third on a one-out groundout, but the Seahawks got a strikeout to keep the game scoreless heading into the second.
- Colagrande continued to deal in the next inning, striking out the first two batters before getting a fly ball to end the top of the second.
- Nicholas Dromboski began the bottom of the second with a walk, stole second, and advanced to third with no outs. Scott Gell gave the Seawolves an early 1-0 lead with a sac fly to right field.
- UNCW tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third with a two-out RBI single up the middle. Colagrande worked out of the inning by stranding a runner at second with a pop out.
- Carson reached again with one out in the bottom of the third on a single up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He later moved to third on another wild pitch with two outs before Villani drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Scheri gave the Seawolves the lead with an RBI single, and Dromboski followed with a two-RBI double to right-center to put the Seawolves ahead 4-1.
- Colagrande again worked out of trouble in the fourth, stranding two runners on a ground ball to short to maintain the three-run advantage. The Seawolves were held scoreless in the bottom half despite hits from Jackson and Schaffer.
- UNCW put two runners on to begin the top of the fifth before a 6-4-3 double play left a runner on third with two outs. A hit by pitch put runners on the corners, but a groundout to short ended the inning.
- Zampieron started the bottom of the fifth with a bunt single, but the Seahawks caught him trying to steal to end the threat. The Seawolves were held scoreless in the inning.
- Colagrande worked around a leadoff single in the sixth, stranding a runner at second to keep the three-run lead. Dromboski was caught stealing after a leadoff walk in the bottom half as Stony Brook was again held scoreless.
- A leadoff double and single by UNCW ended Hunter Colagrande's day as Aidan Colagrande entered in relief. Hunter finished with a career-high-tying nine strikeouts and one earned run. The Seahawks cut the deficit to 4-2 on a sac fly, but the Seawolves got out of the inning with a 6-4-3 double play.
- The Seahawks went to the bullpen in the bottom of the seventh and tossed a 1-2-3 inning.
- Aidan Colagrande returned for the top of the eighth and matched it with a 1-2-3 inning to preserve the two-run lead.
- After the Seawolves were held scoreless in the bottom of the eighth, A. Colagrande closed the door by sitting down the Seahawks in order to secure the 4-2 victory.
