Seawolves Erupt for 23 Runs in Dominant Shutout of Hofstra on Saturday

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Behind a big first two innings and steady pitching, Stony Brook cruised to a 23-0 victory over Hofstra on Saturday at Joe Nathan Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Freshman Dylan Henshaw made the start for the Seawolves this afternoon. The right-hander worked around a one-out walk in the first by inducing a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
  • The Seawolves erupted for seven runs on four hits in the bottom of the first to take an early 7-0 lead over the Pride. Chanz Doughty launched a 417-foot two-run homer to begin the rally, and Scott Gell followed with an RBI double that scored Chris Carson to make it 3-0. Later in the inning, Johnny Pilla and Mike Cervoni each added RBI hits, while two more runs came home on a Hofstra error.
  • Henshaw retired the Pride in order in the second, striking out the final batter of the frame.
  • Stony Brook's offense kept rolling in the bottom half. Chris Carson blasted his fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot that pushed the lead to 9-0. After back-to-back hits from Gell and Mike Villani, Evan Schaffer drove in two with a single, and Nick Zampieron ripped an RBI double down the right field line to stretch the advantage to 13-0.
  • The inning only escalated from there. Nicholas Dromboski and Doughty each added RBI singles, while walks by Gell and Villani brought in more runs as the Seawolves continued to pile on. Schaffer contributed a sacrifice fly, Cervoni and Zampieron each drove in runs, and Dromboski capped the inning with a three-run homer to give Stony Brook a commanding 23-0 lead after a 16-run second inning.
  • Following the offensive outburst, Henshaw returned to the mound and continued to cruise, tossing a perfect third inning before adding another scoreless frame in the fourth to close out his afternoon.
  • Nicholas Rizzo entered in the fifth and worked around a pair of baserunners to keep Hofstra off the board.
  • Luke Ciminiello sparked the bottom of the fifth with a pinch-hit single, and Paul Dulanto also added a pinch-hit knock before Hofstra escaped further damage.
  • Rizzo delivered a clean sixth inning, striking out two in a 1-2-3 frame.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, senior John Rizzo made his first career at-bat and grounded out to shortstop after receiving a warm ovation.
  • Matthew Canizares took over in the seventh and shut the door, sealing the 23-0 victory for the Seawolves.
