STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook used a four-run fifth inning to take control before adding insurance late as the Seawolves secured an 8-4 Senior Day victory over UMass Lowell on Sunday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a one-out single by UMass Lowell off right-hander Dylan Henshaw in the top of the first inning, a ground ball to Chris Carson turned into a double play at short that helped Stony Brook escape the inning.
- Nick Zampieron extended his hitting streak to 14 games by leading off the bottom of the first with a single, but the River Hawks kept the Seawolves off the board.
- UMass Lowell grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second following a two-out double and RBI single. Scott Gell was hit by a pitch to begin the home half, but Stony Brook could not capitalize.
- The River Hawks added another run in the third on a solo home run to right field to move ahead 2-0.
- James Schaffer opened the bottom of the third with a single up the middle, and Zampieron followed with a base hit to right while also advancing on an error. After Chanz Doughty drew a walk to load the bases, Gell worked a bases-loaded walk to bring home Zampieron and cut the deficit to 2-1.
- Henshaw settled in during the fourth, tossing a 1-2-3 inning with his third strikeout of the day. Stony Brook threatened in the bottom half but stranded a runner at third.
- Aidan Colagrande kept UMass Lowell off the board in the fifth, setting up the Seawolves' biggest inning of the afternoon. Back-to-back singles from Dromboski and Doughty set the table before Carson delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2. Gell's bunt single loaded the bases, Mike Cervoni drew a go-ahead RBI walk, and Schaffer lined a two-run single to give Stony Brook a 5-2 advantage.
- UMass Lowell answered with a run in the sixth to trim the lead to 5-3.
- In the seventh, the River Hawks added another RBI single to pull within one, but John Rizzo entered with two outs and stranded the tying run with a key strikeout.
- Matthew Jackson provided a spark in the bottom of the seventh with a pinch-hit single, though the Seawolves were unable to add on.
- Rizzo returned for a scoreless eighth, retiring the River Hawks in order.
- Schaffer sparked the bottom of the eighth with his third hit of the day, and Dromboski followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Carson came through again with a two-run single before Gell added an RBI knock to extend the lead to 8-4.
- Rizzo shut the door in the ninth, securing the victory and earning his team-leading fifth save of the season on Senior Day.
