STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook men's soccer team battled Hofstra to a hard-fought 1-1 draw on Saturday night at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium, delivering a thrilling conference matchup that remained competitive from the opening whistle through the final seconds. The Seawolves (0-0-3, 0-0-1 CAA) and Pride (2-0-1, 0-0-1 CAA) traded chances throughout the night, with neither side willing to give an inch in the CAA opener.
Stony Brook came out firing in the opening half, registering seven shots while holding Hofstra to five. Ryan Farr created several dangerous opportunities for the Seawolves, putting three shots toward goal. Finlay Oliver and Alex Fleury also tested the Pride defense as Stony Brook consistently pushed forward, while goalkeeper Heidar Hermannsson helped keep the match scoreless.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the intensity only increased after halftime. Hofstra broke through in the 61st minute when Carlman finished a chance off an assist from Poll to give the Pride a 1-0 advantage. The Seawolves, however, immediately answered the challenge, continuing to pressure the Hofstra defense and searching for an equalizer.
That breakthrough came in the 79th minute. Following a save on an Oliver shot, Stony Brook earned another opportunity in the attacking third, and Sebastian Drummond delivered in the biggest moment of the night. Oliver found Drummond, who fired home the equalizer at 78:23, sending the Seawolves level at 1-1 and igniting LaValle Stadium.
With momentum swinging, both teams pushed for the decisive goal during the closing minutes. Stony Brook continued to threaten, including a late shot from Nelson Reynoso, while Hofstra's Poll sent an attempt wide in the final minutes. Neither side could find the winner, and the conference-opening battle ultimately ended deadlocked at 1-1.
The Seawolves finished the night with 10 shots, matching Hofstra with three shots on goal, while Hermannsson recorded two saves in goal. The physical nature of the rivalry was evident throughout, with 31 total fouls and eight yellow cards issued during the contest.
Stony Brook now moves forward with three draws through its opening three matches, including a point earned in its first CAA contest of the season.
