NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - Stony Brook was unable to make it four wins in a row as they were bested 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-15) by Rutgers on Thursday.
Ella Sanders led the offense with eight kills on the evening, while Zayda Fuertez paced the team with 11 digs.
How It Happened
SET 1 | Sanders and Damisi Osibodu provided the bulk of Stony Brook's offense early in the first, combining for five kills and a block to keep it a two-point game at 12-10. Despite two more kills from Sanders after the media timeout, the Scarlet Knights began to pull away towards the end of the frame, going on a 7-2 run to close out the 25-18 win.
SET 2 | After initially falling behind 4-0 to open the set, Stony Brook soon took a 7-6 lead as Quinn Anderson picked up two kills while Fuertez and Rayanne Wheat each scored an ace. It did not take long for Rutgers to regain control of the court, however, as they scored 10 of the next 12 to go up 16-9. Hannah Berkefelt, Carey-Jean Block, and Mercedes Motton would all sub in after the break and record a kill to help cut the deficit down to three at 22-19, but in the end it was not enough to slow the Scarlet Knights as they held on to take the set.
SET 3 | Rutgers continued its from the end of the second into the third as the Seawolves were unable to get into a rhythm and quickly found themselves down 15-9 at the half. The deficit soon grew to 11 as Stony Brook trailed 20-9. Kills from Osibodu and Berkefelt would account for all the remaining offense from Stony Brook as they dropped the final set 25-15.
