STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook men's soccer team used a pair of second-half goals to earn a 3-1 victory over Rhode Island on Tuesday evening. With the win, the Seawolves improved to 3-1-5 on the season.
Stony Brook controlled much of the action early, generating nine shots in the opening 45 minutes. The Seawolves broke through in the 26th minute when
Ryan Farr found the back of the net off assists from
Finlay Oliver and
Nokkvi Hjorvarsson, his career first, giving Stony Brook a 1-0 advantage.
Rhode Island responded in the 35th minute as Kuemmritz scored off assists from Husterer and Froberg to even the match at 1-1. Neither side found another goal before the break, sending the teams into halftime level.
The Seawolves regained the lead in the 65th minute.
Tobias Hansen put Stony Brook back in front, finishing a chance created by
Lars Fahre and
Nelson Reynoso to make it 2-1.
Rhode Island increased the pressure following Hansen's goal, but goalkeeper
Heidar Hermannsson kept the Rams from finding an equalizer. Hermannsson made five saves between the 71st and 77th minutes, while Rhode Island also hit the woodwork in the 70th minute.
Stony Brook added an insurance goal in the 86th minute when
Alex Fleury found the back of the net to extend the advantage to 3-1. Oliver picked up his second assist of the night on the goal, while
Kristoffer Aarflot also recorded an assist.
Hermannsson finished with six saves, all coming in the second half, to help secure the victory. Stony Brook recorded 16 shots and five corner kicks, while Rhode Island finished with 18 shots and seven corners. Farr, Hansen and Fleury accounted for the Seawolves' three goals, while Oliver led the team with two assists.
