STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook men's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over Monmouth Monday night, using goals from
Elliot Burgueno and
Ryan Farr to secure the win. With the victory, the Seawolves improved to 4-1-5 overall and 1-1-2 in conference play.
Stony Brook broke through just before halftime after a tightly contested opening 45 minutes. With only 15 seconds remaining in the first half, Burgueno found the back of the net, his second of the season, off an assist from
Nelson Reynoso to give the Seawolves a 1-0 advantage heading into the break.
Monmouth responded early in the second half, applying pressure immediately after the restart.
Heidar Hermannsson made a save just 37 seconds into the period, but the Hawks eventually drew even in the 58th minute when Garcia scored off a feed from Bottini to make it 1-1.
The Seawolves answered less than 12 minutes later. After checking back into the match in the 65th minute, Farr delivered the deciding goal at the 69:02 mark, finishing an assist from
Alex Fleury to put Stony Brook back in front, 2-1.
Stony Brook continued to generate opportunities down the stretch as it looked to add to its advantage. Fleury recorded multiple second-half attempts, while Farr put another shot on frame in the 83rd minute before having an effort blocked in the closing moments. The Seawolves also earned three second-half corner kicks.
Hermannsson helped preserve the one-goal lead with a strong performance in goal, finishing with four saves. Stony Brook held a 9-8 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks, while placing four attempts on target.
Farr led the Stony Brook attack with four shots, including three on goal and the game-winning tally. Burgueno scored on his lone shot of the contest, while Reynoso and Fleury each recorded an assist in the victory.
