STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Following 12 straight road contests to begin the season, the Stony Brook volleyball team made its home debut on Friday, falling to Long Island rival Hofstra 3-0 (25-23, 28-26, 25-22) to snap the team's four-game winning streak.
Ella Sanders led the team with her fourth consecutive double-digit kills match with a team-high 12. She also paced the team with a career-high five service aces. Meanwhile, Damisi Osibodu once again led the way in blocks with eight.
How It Happened
SET 1 | Osibodu continued her red hot start to conference play early in the first as she quickly racked up two kills and two blocks to hand the Seawolves a five-point lead. A 7-1 Hofstra run would allow them to briefly take the lead, only for Sanders to take the advantage right back with a kill and an ace to make it 15-14. The lead would change hands multiple times down the stretch as kills from Ayanna Pierre Louis and Lei Lasike tied it late at 23-23, only for the Pride to sneak out two more points for the win.
SET 2 | The Seawolves played from behind for most of the second, with Sanders accounting for most of the offense with four kills and an ace as Stony Brook trailed 15-10 halfway through. Multiple kills and blocks from Mercedes Motton and Osibodu, coupled with five Hofstra errors would allow the Seawolves to eventually tie it again at 23-23. From there they would fight off Hofstra's set point three times with Osibodu notching another block and a kill, but in the end Hofstra would once again hold on just long enough to take the set.
SET 3 | Stony Brook built a slim lead early on in the third as Lasike notched a pair of kills and back-to-back blocks to make it 10-8. Both teams would soon be knotted up 11-11 and would continue to trade points all the way up to 20-20 with Sanders leading the way for the Seawolves with another three kills and an ace. Just the previous sets, however, it was Hofstra who managed to get hot in the end and outlast the Seawolves to close out the match.
